Hands Across the Falls Celebrates its Fourth Year with a Month Long Virtual Event in September

Spokane, Wash. — Hands Across the Falls 2020 is a go despite COVID-19. The popular community event hosted by Recovery Café Spokane has gone virtual. “We’ve certainly had to pivot,” said Lee Williams CEO of Community-Minded Enterprises, the non-profit home of the Café. “If Bloomsday can be virtual, so can Hands Across the Falls.”
The past three years the event has been held on the last Saturday of September, on the Monroe Street Bridge with participants holding hands in a show of support for recovery. Concerns over COVID-19 meant that is not an option. Instead, this year’s celebration will extend the entire month of September to coincide with National Recovery Month, and it is all virtual. “We are excited to keep the tradition going, just in a little different format,” said Christine McMackin, Manager of Recovery Café Spokane. “The same great spirit, just adjusting for the times.”
Community-Minded and Recovery Café Spokane encourage people to show their support by printing one of four downloadable signs and taking a picture with it. The signs include “I Support Recovery”, “I am Recovery”, “I Celebrate” and “I Remember”. The ‘remember’ and ‘celebrate’ signs are customizable so you can include the name of someone who is celebrating recovery or remember someone who had lost their battle to addiction. Photos can be emailed to email@example.com for use on social media or posted to the Facebook event page Hands Across the Falls – 2020. The first 250 people to share a photo will receive a Hands Across the Falls t-shirt.
As in previous years, the City of Spokane and the Spokane County Board of Commissions have made proclamations in support of Recovery Month and Hands Across the Falls. “The City and County have been great partners and we appreciate their support,” said Williams.
Lending generous financial support this year: Amerigroup, Empire Health Foundation, Molina Healthcare, MultiCare, Oxford House, Pacific Northwest Adult and Teen Challenge, Riverside Recovery Center, Spokane Regional Health District and Stone Group.
